Carol Coultas is a veteran journalist with more than 30 years of news reporting and editing experience. Since 2008, Coultas has served as editor of Mainebiz, a multimedia company providing the leading source of business news and analysis in Maine. In a wide-ranging interview, Coultas and show host Steve Woods discuss the evolution of business journalism, the intersection of politics and business, and Maine’s “worst state for business” label from Forbes.
Carol Coultas grew up in Massachusetts, daughter of a career Air Force father. Her first job after college was working as a Vista volunteer in social services. Coultas then took a part-time job as writer/receptionist at a small weekly paper in Billerica, MA, and she has been in journalism ever since.
Coultas met her husband while working at the Lowell Sun. The newlyweds spent the first year of their marriage teaching English in Mexico. Upon returning to the States, her husband landed a job at the Lewiston Sun Journal. Coultas also began working at the Sun Journal, and continued there for 22 years, 9 of which were spent as managing editor. In October of 2008, Coultas made the transition to her current role as editor of Mainebiz.
Mainebiz recently relaunched its website and will debut a print redesign in February, which Coultas is working on. Mainebiz also provides a forum for ideas for Maine’s business community, hosting community events and yearly award ceremonies to recognize business leaders.
Coultas and her husband live in Harpswell, and have two children. Their daughter is a journalist in New York City and their son is entering his last year as an international studies and political science student at Northeastern University. When Coultas is not working, she enjoys baking pies.
