Dr. Kevin Strange, President of the Mount Desert Island Biological Laboratory, was born and raised in California. He holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Biology from the University of California at Davis. Strange received his doctorate in Cellular and Molecular Physiology from the University of British Columbia. Before arriving in Maine, Strange was associate professor at Harvard Medical School and Director of the Critical Care Research Laboratories at Children’s Hospital in Boston.
Strange is an expert in the field of cellular stress biology and leads groundbreaking research into how proteins are damaged by environmental stressors and how cells detect, degrade and repair these damaged proteins. This work is vital to understanding the degenerative changes that occur as humans age. Strange described for Stevoe what cellular stress biology is and the research currently being done to slow the aging process.
Strange joined MDIBLas President in 2010. In 2013, Strange was named as one of ten Maine “innovative business people” who “hold tremendous promise for the state” and its future economy by MaineBiz.
In 2013, together with assistant professor Dr. Voot Yin, he founded MDI Biological Laboratory’s first spinout company, Novo Biosciences, Inc. Novo Biosciences is a regenerative medicine company developing small molecule therapies that reactivate and stimulate innate healing abilities in humans and animals. The two founded this company to accelerate the testing and development of a novel drug for patients with heart disease.
Founded in 1898, The MDI Biological Laboratory is a non-profit, independent biomedical research institution dedicated to improving human health and well-being through basic research, education and ventures that transform discoveries into cures. The MDI Biological Laboratory is located in the Bar Harbor area on Mount Desert Island in Maine.
