Linda Greenlaw<\/a> was born in Connecticut.\u00a0 When her father got a job as an information systems manager for BIW, the Greenlaw\u2019s moved to Topsham, Maine.\u00a0 Growing up, the family always summered on Isle au Haut, where Greenlaw now resides (year-round population of approx. 40).<\/p>\n

Greenlaw graduated from Colby with a degree in English and government.\u00a0 To help pay for college, she began working through the summers as a cook and a deckhand on a sword-fishing boat. \u00a0After graduating, she became America\u2019s only female swordfish boat captain.\u00a0 Greenlaw never saw gender as a barrier; she says she just wants to be the best at what she does.\u00a0 Greenlaw spoke to Stevoe about how she never saw herself as a feminitst.\u00a0\u00a0“Gender shouldn’t hold you back.\u00a0 Find something you love, and do it.”<\/p>\n

In October of 1991, Greenlaw was captain of the Hannah Boden<\/i>, sister ship to the Andrea Gail, <\/i>which disappeared in what came to be known as the \u201cPerfect Storm\u201d.\u00a0 \u00a0Greenlaw had been in radio contact with Billy Tyne (captain of the Andrea Gail)<\/i> warning him of the impending storm, before the ship went down.\u00a0 In 1997, Sebastian Junger wrote a nonfiction best-seller about the tragedy titled ”The Perfect Storm” and the book made Greenlaw famous. \u00a0In 2000, Hollywood turned Junger’s book into a movie, starring George Clooney, Mark Wahlberg and Greenlaw is portrayed by Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio.<\/p>\n

Greenlaw is the best-selling author of \u201cThe Hungry Ocean\u201d, \u201cThe Lobster Chronicles\u201d and \u201cAll Fishermen Are Liars\u201d.\u00a0 She has also co-authored two cookbooks with her mother, and has written a series of mystery novels set in Maine.\u00a0 Greenlaw stars in \u201cSwords:\u00a0 Life on the Line\u201d on the Discovery Channel, where she captains the Seahawk<\/i> and returns to the famous Hannah Boden<\/i>.\u00a0 Greenlaw’s most recent book “Lifesaving Lessons:\u00a0 Notes from an Accidental Mother”, is her version of what happened when going through the process of adopting a teenage girl who came to Isle au Haut with\u00a0the girl’s\u00a0“uncle” and how this experience changed her life.<\/p>\n

Stevoe and Greelaw discussed the swordfishing industry, how\u00a0the harvest\u00a0is\u00a0100% sustainable and healthy, and how\u00a0the circular hooks that are used to make the release of fish under legal length easy.\u00a0 Greenlaw also spoke about what its like being off shore for a complete lunar cycle, and that swordfishing is always an adventure.<\/p>\n

Greenlaw is also involved in the Coastal Studies for Girls, a science and leadership school, based in Freeport.\u00a0 The school accepts 10th<\/sup> grade girls from all over the country for a semester, to promote aspirations in the sciences field.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
