Climatologist Dan Dixon joined TideSmart Talk with Stevoe to discuss his research.

Through his work as a climatologist, Dixon has traveled extensively on expeditions to collect ice cores from glaciers around the world. Past trips have sent researchers from the institute to Chile, Asia, Greenland, Russia, New Zealand and, most frequently, Antarctica. The work involves drilling hundreds of feet into glaciers to collect the cores which are then transported to what is essentially a giant freezer on the University of Maine campus and divided into sections only centimeters in length to be studied at the institute.

The Climate Change Institute is an interdisciplinary research unit organized to conduct research on the variability of Earth’s environmental systems in relation to human activity. This research is made possible through support from the National Science Foundation, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration as well as many other organizations dedicated to the field of Climatology.

Dixon’s work has led to documented evidence that glacial melting in the European and Southern Alps is unlike past melts, and factually corresponds with human-produced greenhouse gasses.
