Mainers United for Marriage Coalition<\/a> is a broad coalition of businesses, faith organizations and people working to win the freedom to marry for same-sex couples in Maine.<\/p>\nMaine voters recently made history by being the first in the country to approve same-sex marriage by a popular vote. \u00a0The 2012 referendum was a reversal of a similar bill, which Gov. Baldacci signed into law three years earlier. \u00a0In 2009, opponents succesfully petitioned for a referendum before the law went into effect, and voters rejected the bill.<\/p>\n
The 2012 election was a significant step forward for marriage equality, with Maryland and Washington voting to uphold similar laws passed by their legislature and Minnesota voting down a consitiutional amendment that would have defined marriage as being betweeon one man and one woman.<\/p>\n
McTighe is a longtime political advocate, with more than 12 years of experience in political strategy, public affairs and electoral campaigning.<\/p>\n
A veteran of more than a dozen candidate and LGBT issue campaigns, he served as Public Education Director for Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders (GLAD), overseeing marriage work in Maine before being named campaign manager. \u00a0McTighe previously served as political director for MassEquality, leading a succesful statewide lobbying, public education and field campaign to protect marriage equality in\u00a0Massachusetts.<\/p>\n
McTighe also spent 3 years working with the Human Rights Campaign (HRC).<\/p>\n
McTighe is active in the York community where he serves as a volunteer firefighter and was recently named Firefighter of the Year. \u00a0He is an avid hockey player and lifelong Bruins fan.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
